Did You Know That Levi’s Produced Jeans Using Hemp?

We were excited to learn today that Levi’s is following a plan to continue its commitment to sustainable agriculture, which includes its awesome hemp jeans.

Sourcing Journal reports that the global denim brand will be continuing its work with their impressive fabric that uses hemp to create jeans that look and feel as comfortable as regular denim.

The special fabric, called Cottonised Hemp, is something we can expect to see a lot more of in the future. As the name suggests, the hemp undergoes a “cottonisation” process, which is designed to leave the hemp as soft as cotton.

Levi’s High Loose and Stay Loose jeans consist of 77% cotton and 23% hemp, making them a more sustainable option than 100% cotton jeans. This is because fewer chemicals are used in the production process and less energy is required from start to finish.

A Powerful New Image for Hemp

The thing we’re most excited about, though, isn’t the exact percentage of hemp or the technology involved – it’s the way that Levi’s are doing so much to change the image of hemp clothing. The fact is that hemp clothing still has a way to go in establishing itself in the mainstream. It’s getting there, but as yet the overwhelming image that pops into people’s minds when you say “hemp clothing” is of hippies from the ‘60s or of clothes that have some connection with cannabis!

It’s not easy to educate a nation, or indeed a planet, and to change long-held perceptions. And we should know, right? As hemp growers we still struggle against stubborn stereotypes and received opinions about cannabis and CBD products.

Often, one of the best ways to get people to change how they think is not to address their ideas, but to address the images they hold in their minds. The truth is that we will often be more swayed by something that looks cool and that carries a truck load of style points, than something that appeals purely to the intellect. …It’s not flattering to our intelligence, but that’s just how it is.

Or, to put it more succinctly, Levi’s is a cool brand and they’re making hemp clothes very desirable. And we love that!
